OVERVIEW - Activity codes and values enable you to filter, group, sort, and report activity information according to your organization's unique requirements. For example, if your organization has more than one location, you can create a Location code with values such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. You can then associate activities with a specific location, such as New York.
You can define three types of activity codes, global activity codes, EPS-level activity codes, and project-level activity codes. You can assign global activity codes and values to activities in all projects. You can assign EPS-level activity codes and values to the EPS. EPS-level activity codes are useful when you don't want certain codes to be accessible to all users, or project-specific. You can assign project-level activity codes and values to activities only in the project for which the codes were created. Each activity code can have an unlimited number of values. - Primavera
- Copy the project, WBS. Name the new ID, COD, and name, Activity Codes. Open the project.
- Click Enterprise on the menu bar and select Activity Codes
- In the activity view, click on “Enterprise” from the menu bar at the top of the window and select Activity Codes.
- Assuming that you are using a brand new database, a Windows dialogue box pops-up telling you that no activity codes have been defined yet. Click OK to continue.
- The Activity Codes window is displayed. At the top there are three choices as to what type of code you would like to make: Global, EPS & Project. The differences between these are only how many activities will be able to access them on this particular database. In case anyone is using a shared database, let’s click on EPS to isolate our new codes to only our Training EPS.
TIP – EPS codes offer more flexibility than the other code types.
- Now, click on Modify.
- The Activity Code Definitions window appears. Click Add.
- Another window pops-up asking you to select an EPS from our current database. Highlight the TRAIN EPS and click the Select button on the right.
- This will take you back to the Activity Code Definitions window that now shows a new Activity Code Definition under the EPS, Training, part of the database, Scheduling Professionals. Name the new definition Stage of Construction. Click Close.
- Back to the original Activity Codes window, there is now an activity code definition that is displayed in the drop-down menu at top. We now need to populate the definition with actual codes. Click Add.
- A Windows dialogue box comes up telling us that the filter being applied to what codes we can see will be changed to include codes that are not currently attached to the open project. This is fine. Click OK.
- A new code should be visible. Name its Value, FND, and its description, Foundation.
- Add four more codes and name them as follows:
- FRM, Framing
- MEP, Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing
- DRY, Insulation & Drywall
- FIN, Finishes
- Close the Activity Codes window.
- Now, we need to assign the activity codes that we just created. Go down to the Activity Details panel and click on the tab, Codes.
- If the Assign button is grayed out, highlight activity L2-1000 in the activity table.
- Click Assign.
- The Assign Activity Codes window comes up. Click on EPS at the top and expand the window a bit. The codes that we just created should be visible now.
- Highlight FRM – Framing and click the Assign button on the right.
- The code has just been assigned to the activity. Notice that the green-plus button has become grayed out while the red-X remove button has become highlighted. Also, notice that in the Codes panel, the activity code is visible.
- The Assign Activity Codes window remains open allowing us to continue to add codes. Holding CTRL, highlight both L2-1010 & L2-1020 in the activity table and in the Assign Activity Codes window click Assign again.
TIP – You can assign an activity code to as many activities at the same time as you want. If the Assign Activity Codes window is not visible, just highlight the activities you want coded and right-click. Select Assign from the drop-down menu and click Activity Codes…
Note – As many activity codes as you want can be applied to the same activity as long as the activity codes are from separate definitions. Within one definition, only one code can be added.
- Using the WBS as your guide, go ahead and finish coding the remaining activities.
- Let’s create another activity code definition. Click Enterprise – Activity Codes. Once the Activity Codes window has come up again, make sure EPS is selected and then click Modify. The Activity Code Definitions window appears. Click Add. On the Select EPS window, select TRAIN. A new code definition should appear back on the Activity Code Definitions window. Rename it Subcontractor. Click Close.
- On the Activity Codes window, make sure TRAIN - Subcontractor is visible in the Select Activity Code drop-down menu. If not click the downward pointing arrow to select it.
- Add the following codes:
- GC, Tower Builders Inc.
- ELEC, Short Circuit Electricians Inc.
- MECH, Air & Water Mechanical Inc.
- DRY, Monty Drywall Inc.
Once you are done, close the window.
Apply the subcontractor codes to the following activities as follows:
